The Research
It is estimated that one in four of us will experience mental health difficulties in our lifetime, from a low period to more serious depression, to a small number who will experience severe mental health problems.
Clinical studies have shown that arts engagement promotes recovery, relaxation and reduces stress, anxiety and depression. Arts programmes for people experiencing mental health difficulties have been linked with improved confidence, self-esteem and self-understanding.
There is a rapidly growing demand in Ireland for collaboration between artists, arts organisations and the health service as arts participation has a proven relationship with improved health and well-being and a valuable social return on investment. There is significant evidence highlighting the benefits of arts engagement on our mental and physical health.
In May 2024 I carried out an Arts and Health survey as part of my project research with the Social Entrepreneurs Ideas Academy 2024 with 39 respondents.
When asked “Do you notice a change in your mood or wellbeing as a result of participating in a creative activity?” 95% of respondents said ‘Yes’
Similarly, when asked “Do you think that there should be more arts services or initiatives in your area for people with mental or physical health conditions?” 97% of respondents said ‘Yes’
It is clear that there is a connection between engagement in creative activities and wellbeing and also a strong demand for more arts and health initiatives and Expressive Minds strives to address this gap in the community in Sligo and Leitrim.
